Many people start a nonprofit for all the right reasons and then discover there is actually more work involved than originally expected. Some have a service create their nonprofit and really don't understand what they have created.
Some people start a nonprofit to become rich. I do not recommend this as a business plan. Remember one fact – the organization is tax-exempt, you aren’t. If you want to become rich with a nonprofit, the easiest way is probably to start out very rich, and spend down until you are just rich.
Anyone can start a nonprofit, which is a problem in my mind, because actually running one can be challenging. Always remember, it’s not just a cause, it’s a business.
These are some of the notes I have taken over five years of mentoring and consulting nonprofits, plus founding and operating my own. I hope they are helpful.
